Saranda to Permet by car: day trip or overnight?

Permet offers a change from Saranda's coast: a town by the Vjosa, an inland landscape and the possibility of visiting Benja separately. The important rental decision is whether to return to Saranda that evening or spend a night inland. A car makes either plan more flexible, but the destination name does not establish permission for every road suggested by a map. This guide keeps the town visit, the Benja approach and any onward journey distinct, so you can choose a realistic outing without treating southern Albania as one continuous sightseeing loop.

Decide what you mean by a Permet visit

Start with the town itself. If your aim is lunch, a walk and time away from the coast, organise the day around a convenient arrival and an unhurried return. You do not need to attach a thermal-pool visit, a gorge walk and another historic town to make the journey worthwhile. Each additional activity changes the timing and may introduce a separate access question.

Benja is a distinct destination rather than a facility in central Permet. Albania's national tourism agency describes the thermal waters in the Lengarica area near the town and identifies the historic bridge as a landmark. That description establishes the place, not today's road condition, parking arrangement, bathing suitability or accessibility. Save the exact location you intend to reach, then verify its current visitor approach.

If your main interest is a longer walk or an outdoor activity, plan that activity first and fit the drive around it. Ask its provider where the meeting point is, where the outing finishes and whether transport between those points is included. A rental booking covers the car arrangement; it is not permission to enter every landscape shown in destination photographs.

When a return day works and when to stay overnight

A return day is more practical when you start rested from Saranda, keep the visit focused and leave room for the drive back. Work from a current route between your actual accommodation and the intended parking place. Add collection, stops, walking and meals separately. Do not treat the navigation estimate as the duration of the entire excursion or promise the group a return time based on driving alone.

An overnight stay becomes attractive when you want an unhurried town visit and a separate Benja outing, or when the driver would otherwise face a long return after an active day. Confirm accommodation parking and check-in before changing the itinerary. Keeping the car for another night can affect the rental charge, parking and return appointment, so obtain an authorised extension rather than simply coming back late.

Compare the two plans on paper. The day trip keeps your Saranda accommodation and avoids another check-in, but concentrates the travel into one day. The overnight option adds accommodation and luggage handling while allowing a slower pace. Neither is automatically cheaper or better; choose the arrangement whose practical details are already clear, including how the car eventually returns to the supplier.

Check the permitted road, not just the shortest line

Show the supplier the intended outward and return route before travelling if any section is uncertain. Localrent's Albania conditions restrict use to paved public roads and name prohibited routes. A navigation suggestion is not an exception to those conditions. The fact that a road connects two places, or that another traveller has driven it, does not establish permission for your rental.

In particular, do not turn this outing into a Berat circuit through the Osumi canyon or SH74: that connection is listed among the prohibited routes in the published Albania terms. The restriction is relevant even if the map appears to offer a scenic shortcut. It does not mean every journey to Permet is prohibited; it means you must distinguish the specific road from the destination name.

Avoid adding unnamed mountain tracks to reach a viewpoint or a supposedly quieter entrance. Ask for a permitted alternative or leave out the stop. Choosing an SUV does not cancel the contract's road restrictions. Keep any written clarification with the booking, and recheck the route if roadworks or a closure force a change rather than assuming the original permission covers an improvised detour.

Keep Benja access separate from the town arrival

Before leaving Permet for Benja, establish the current public-road approach and where ordinary visitor vehicles should stop. A pin labelled thermal baths may identify the pools rather than the vehicle arrival point. Confirm how much walking remains after parking and whether the surface and access suit everyone in the group. Do not drive onto a footpath because it appears to continue towards the water.

Use current information from the responsible local visitor service or your confirmed activity provider. This guide does not verify a universal parking fee, opening time or guaranteed space at Benja. If a charge is displayed, understand what it covers and retain any required receipt. A person directing traffic informally does not, by itself, establish that the space or access is authorised.

Decide in advance what would make you skip the additional stop: unsuitable weather, an uncertain approach, a tired group or insufficient return time. Having a rental makes that decision easier. It should not create pressure to continue merely because the destination is already saved on a phone. Returning to the town or keeping the day shorter is a legitimate use of the flexibility you booked.

Do not confuse a landscape visit with an activity clearance

Thermal-water photographs and destination descriptions are not personal health advice or an assessment of current water conditions. Do not infer that bathing is suitable for every visitor, or that any claimed therapeutic benefit is medically established. Anyone with a relevant health concern should seek appropriate professional advice rather than using a tourism page as clearance to enter the water.

Likewise, a bridge or gorge photograph does not show a universally suitable walking route. Check the intended activity with a qualified local provider when guidance is needed. Follow closures and local instructions, and do not attempt to bypass a restriction to reach the picture you have seen. The rental's insurance terms should not be read as cover for swimming, hiking or other activities away from the vehicle.

For a simple sightseeing day, keep the plan within the group's abilities and the confirmed visitor area. Carry the items you will actually need outside the car and arrange how belongings will be managed. Do not assume a cloakroom, changing room or supervised storage exists unless the provider has confirmed it. These small practical questions often determine whether a stop is comfortable.

Plan the car around passengers rather than terrain marketing

For permitted paved-road travel, begin with the number of passengers, luggage and transmission preference. Two people carrying day bags have different needs from a family checking out of a Saranda apartment with suitcases and a pushchair. Review the selected offer and ask about the actual usable luggage space. A vehicle category name alone does not establish that every bag will fit out of sight.

Confirm child restraints and any additional driver in the booking. Another adult who can drive your own car at home is not automatically authorised to drive this rental. If sharing the journey matters to the plan, arrange the additional driver before departure and check the required documents. Do not rely on an unconfirmed driver change as the fallback after a tiring visit.

At collection, take time to understand the controls and document the vehicle's condition under the supplier's process. Check that essential equipment works before leaving. A short explanation of unfamiliar transmission or parking-brake controls is more useful at the handover than after reaching a crowded arrival area. The car should support a straightforward journey, not add avoidable uncertainty.

Count the full cost without mixing security and spending

The relevant comparison includes the rental period, delivery if selected, fuel, parking and any overnight accommodation or activity booking. Keep refundable security separate from expected spending, while allowing for its effect on available funds. A low daily rental headline cannot show whether an overnight itinerary costs less than a focused day trip when the other arrangements are still unknown.

Check the mileage condition against the complete return route and any confirmed extension, not just Saranda to Permet in one direction. Read the selected offer rather than assuming all cars have the same allowance. If an itinerary change would exceed it, ask about the cost before committing. Do not choose a prohibited shortcut to reduce mileage or recover a small saving.

No-deposit availability, where genuinely offered, does not automatically mean no advance payment, no card requirement or no damage responsibility. Check the payment method for each stage and the supplier's collection requirements. Vrenty Car presents the comparison; Localrent handles the booking and the selected rental company supplies the car. The terms of that specific offer govern the handover.

Avoid stacking every southern Albania stop into one day

The Blue Eye, Gjirokastra and Permet each deserve their own timing and access decisions. Do not add all of them simply because they appear in the same regional search results. A short stop can expand when parking is busy, the walk takes longer than expected or the group wants to stay. The road journey then remains, even if the visit has used the available daylight or energy.

If your holiday has several driving days, allocate the main interests first and leave spare time between them. Choose a separate Blue Eye outing when that is the priority; use a different day for a substantial historic-town visit. This keeps the car useful without making every excursion dependent on a perfectly timed sequence of attractions.

For a one-day rental, select the single destination that best matches the group. Permet is not automatically the best choice merely because it is less familiar than the coastal stops. Compare the complete door-to-door effort, including collection and return, with the time you actually want to spend there. A nearer alternative may be the more enjoyable decision on a short stay.

Use weather and the return obligation to set the pace

Check the forecast for the inland destination as well as Saranda before departure. Coastal conditions do not describe every part of the journey. Ask about current access when poor weather or recent disruption makes the route uncertain, and follow official closures. If the visit depends on an outdoor activity, confirm its operating decision separately from the availability of the rental car.

Work backwards from the agreed vehicle return, not from the time you would ideally like to finish sightseeing. Allow for the drive, a fuel stop if required, unloading and the supplier's handover procedure. If you have a ferry or flight afterwards, that departure adds its own reporting and check-in requirements. Do not use the shortest possible road estimate to bridge two fixed appointments.

If the driver is tired or the plan has changed materially, contact the supplier about a lawful adjustment rather than rushing to preserve the original schedule. An extension or different return point requires agreement and may cost extra. Keep the communication with the booking so the eventual handover is based on confirmed arrangements, not an assumption made during the excursion.

A practical plan before you reserve

Write a short itinerary containing the actual starting address, the permitted route to Permet, the chosen town stop and the return arrangement. Add Benja only after confirming its separate approach and the visit's suitability. For an overnight, include accommodation parking and the following day's route. Keep attraction contacts separate from the rental company's support details so you know whom to ask about each issue.

Then compare available cars for those real dates and times. If the offer fits the route, passengers and payment needs, the rental can make an inland stay easier to organise. If too many essentials remain unresolved, simplify the outing or consider arranged transport with clear pickup and return terms. The useful outcome is a coherent trip, not a longer list of places reached at the expense of a calm return to Saranda.
